Genetics of infectious diseases, new tools for understanding infection

Prof Michel P. Glauser studied medicine in Lausanne, Hamburg and Berlin. He got his MD thesis in immunology, followed by an internship and residency in internal medicine. He then went for a training in infectious diseases both at Yale University School of Medicine, and the University of California San Diego Medical Center. In 1978, he was appointed chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University Medical Center in Lausanne. From 2000 to 2003, he was Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. Dr M.P. Glauser is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London), and of the American Academy of Microbiology. He has been president of the International Immunocompromised Host Society, of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, founder and president of the Swiss Society for Infectious Diseases. He has been for 12 years (1989-2001) a member of the Research Council of the Swiss National Foundation for Research, and president of its Division of Biology and Medicine for 4 years. He was president of the Swiss National Program for research on AIDS from 1992 to 2004. His research interests include experimental infections (pyelonephritis, endocarditis, septic shock), the molecular basis of severe infections related to innate immunity, infections in immunocompromised hosts including neutropenic cancer patients, and AIDS. He is the author of more than 400 scientific publications. He is presently chairing several philanthropic organizations supporting research and education in biomedicine.
